Eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is the preferred treatment for removing bags under the eyes or drooping eyelids, conditions that can add years to your appearance, give you a “tired” appearance, and even impair your vision. The type of surgery necessary can only be determined after a consultation that includes thorough evaluation of facial structures. It is possible that other forms of treatment could be recommended such as dermal chemical peel, injectable fillers, or Botox cosmetic therapy.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) usually performed to help eliminate drooping upper eyelid appearance. The incision is usually designed to be in the usual upper eyelid sulcus (crease). It may extend into a normal skin fold in the crow’s foot region. This does help give a more youthful appearance to the upper eyelid and may be combined with a forehead (browlift) lift. It may even be combined with a facelift/neck lift procedure if that is necessary to satisfy your other individual concerns.

Lower eyelid blepharoplasty (eyelid lift) is often performed with an incision (cut) that is placed approximately 2 mm below the lower eyelid lash line. This allows the ability to reduce the bulging and laxity of the lower eyelid that contributes to the “tired” look. Just as with upper eyelid blepharoplasty, the incision may also extend into the crow’s foot region. This procedure may also be combined with upper blepharoplasty, forehead lift, and facelift if you desire improvement in these other areas.

Eyelid surgery may be performed under local anesthesia with intravenous sedation administered by a qualified anesthesia provider in our accredited, in-office surgical suite. Dr. Kurley will make tiny incisions along the natural lines of your eyelids through which excess fat, skin and muscle are removed. The incisions are closed with fine sutures which will leave scars that are practically invisible. Upper eyelid surgery usually takes about 45-60 minutes to perform and a similar length of time for the lower eyelid surgery. You will generally be in the recovery area for approximately 1-1-1/2 hours until you are able to be discharged in the care of a responsible adult. Hospitalization is not desired, or necessary. Your privacy and safety are our primary concerns.

Most patients are back to their normal routines within days, although complete recovery may take a few weeks. Swelling, bruising and some discomfort are part of the recovery process, but usually can be alleviated with cold compresses and appropriate medication.

Your results associated with upper and lower eyelid blepharoplasty are generally fairly long lasting. This is because the eyelids are unique. The eyelids are the only area on the body where there is no fat interposed between the skin and muscle to weigh the result down. The weight of the fat diminishes the length of time that your result appears evident. The result associated with blepharoplasty will therefore often be evident for 10-15 years and sometimes longer.
