What Is Liposuction?
Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty and suction lipectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the body shape by removing unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body that are resistant to dieting and spot exercising. Liposuction is commonly used on the abdomen, buttocks, cheeks, chin, hips, knees, neck, thighs, and upper arms. The procedure is often performed along with other procedures, such as abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) or facelift surgery.
There are several techniques in liposuction that offer many benefits over the traditional techniques. Laser assisted liposuction, tumescent liposuction, SMART LIPO (SmartLipo™™), are a few of these techniques that typically involve quicker recovery times and more precise results.
Are You a Good Candidate for Liposuction?
You will be the best candidate for liposuction if you are:
- Physically healthy and of normal weight but with areas of excess fat that are resistant to regular diet and exercise.
- Psychologically stable
- Have realistic expectations of what the procedure can offer.
- Have firm skin with good elasticity
People tend to achieve the best results, while older patients with diminished skin elasticity may not achieve the same results as those with firmer, more elastic skin.
What Liposuction Can Do for You?
- Liposuction can successfully:
- Improve the shape of your body
- Improve feelings of self-confidence regarding your body image.
- Likely allow a wider variety of clothing than before.
What Liposuction Will Not Do for You?
Liposuction will not replace the benefits you receive from regular exercise and a healthy diet and is not recommended as a method for overall weight loss. With liposuction, Dr. Kurley is able to sculpt and contour areas of fat deposits that have been resistant to your efforts to rid them by exercise and diet. Dr. Kurley and his team at Advanced Advanced Aesthetics Surgery & Laser Center in Champaign, IL will be glad to give suggestions designed to help you maintain your liposuction results.
What Can You Expect With Liposuction Surgery?
The amount of time needed for liposuction will vary due to several factors, including the amount of fat being removed, the technique used, and the number of areas being treated. In general however, liposuction typically takes between one and two hours to complete. The procedure is performed in our fully accredited (AAAASF) on-site surgical facility and typically involves either sedation or general anesthesia.
Dr. Kurley begins with small incisions made on the areas of the body being treated. A narrow, blunt-tipped tube called a cannula is then inserted through these incisions. The cannula manipulated by Dr. Kurley, disrupts the fat cells before they are suctioned out. The incisions are so small that stitches are not needed.
What Can You Expect During Recovery From Liposuction?
After your liposuction procedure, you may or may not experience any or all of the following:
- Some discomfort
- Mild stiffness
- Temporary numbness.
- Fluid drainage from the incisions
- Mild to moderate swelling
Dr. Kurley will prescribe pain medication to help with any discomfort that you may feel, as well as antibiotics to prevent infection. Patients should start walking around as soon as possible, or as recommended to help speed your recovery.
A compression garment similar to a girdle is typically worn for three weeks to support the skin and control swelling. Most of the swelling and bruising subsides within 10 – 14 days, though some slight swelling can persist for more than six months. You will notice an immediate change in the shape of your body after surgery, though the final results will be apparent when all of the swelling has completely faded. Other liposuction techniques such as laser assisted liposuction (SMART LIPO) and tumescent anesthesia, typically involve a decrease in post-operative bruising and swelling.
The amount of time it takes to recover after liposuction will vary for each person. More than likely, you will be able to return to work within a few days after your liposuction procedure. Dr. Kurley encourages you to resume low impact exercise and light weight lifting after one week.
